October 2012 Shore News Article

Thanksgiving is a time for all of us to reflect upon our daily lives, and to be thankful for the people who have made all those things possible. The Musquodoboit Harbour Farmers Market (MHFM) is thankful for many things.

First of all, we are thankful to you, our customers, for visiting our farmers’ market every Sunday. We are a small, but growing community Farmers Market, and we have been in operation for five years. Without you, we couldn’t have grown as we have, becoming a vibrant meeting place where people connect, share stories and discuss community concerns while enjoying a freshly brewed coffee and a home-baked treat. At their sides are bags of fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs, and prepared foods. Another bag carries a new treasure or two: locally made arts and crafts.

Not too long ago, if you wanted to wake up on Sunday and head to your local farmers market, you had to drive all the way in to Dartmouth or Halifax. Not anymore!

We are also thankful for the more than twenty vendors each week who work tirelessly to bring you fresh grown produce and new, uniquely crafted items every Sunday from 9am-1pm all the way from June to December.

One of our hardworking vendors is Jim Turner, a Horticulturalist by trade. Jim is the owner of Nova Bluewater Farm, which has been certified organic since 2008.  He operates in an 1880s farmstead in beautiful DeBaie’s Cove, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Everything Jim sells is grown in natural soils amended with compost generated from “on the farm” processes and compostable waste material from the Dobbit Bakehouse. To bring you the best possible produce, Jim harvests the day before in the late afternoon and again in the very early morning the day of the market. Since 1980 Jim has been concerned with our food supply, firmly believing that organic production is more resilient, providing a better process for sustainable food production with greater consideration for Mother Earth.  Jim has been involved with the MHFM since its inception. He sits on our MHFM Board and is presently our Treasurer. The MHFM has been a major factor in helping Jim fulfill his dream of owning a small farm where he can continually refine and experiment his processes.  Jim is a great example of of why our customers keep coming back to the market.

If you aren’t familiar with the MHFM yet, we hope you’ll come see us this Sunday, and every Sunday 9am-1pm, from June to mid-December. As always, we’ll be at the Bingo Hall in the Eastern Shore Community Centre (a.k.a. The Rink) right in the heart of Musquodoboit Harbour, NS.

To see whats fresh and new at the MHFM join our Facebook page at: Musquodoboit-Harbour-Farmers-Market-MHFM.  There you can direct message us to add your email address to our weekly e-newsletter. If you are interested in becoming a vendor at our market please call us at 902-220-9114 or email Kelty Moser at info@ mhfarmersmarket.ca
