Sustainability is important to the health of communities in the long term. This has social, economic, and environmental implications, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating concept. Instead, it is an opportunity for everyone to consider the ways in which they contribute to their own community and subsequently, the world we all share.
The choices that we make each day as consumers and citizens have a direct impact. Many people are now consciously choosing to live more sustainably and often this includes shopping locally and growing some of their own food. This can even be taken a step further by participating in the local farmers’ market.
Backyard gardening is a healthy, rewarding activity that can yield significant amounts of produce. If you often over estimate the amount that your family will consume when you plant your vegetables or grow an abundance of gorgeous flowers and end up composting many of them when you prune, you can turn that excess into cash by vending at the Musquodoboit Harbour Farmers’ Market. In addition to those with beautifully verdant green thumbs, many of you possess other valuable skills. Is canning your thing? Are you an amazing cook? Do you create beautiful artwork? Homemade canned goods, ready-made foods, and unique creations are always popular with customers. You never know where your talents and interests can take you, and the Market is an excellent way to get started.
Many of our wonderful core vendors have an established business and participate regularly, but occasional sellers are also encouraged to attend. Vending at the Market is an excellent way to become more involved in your community. It is a means to develop relationships with others who have similar interests and values, as well as to learn and share knowledge in a cooperative environment. Furthermore, you can feel good about contributing to the vibrancy and long term well-being of your neighborhood! If you prefer to participate in a different capacity, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities.
